Book One of the Cormand Chronicles
Alex, princess and Sentinel of the holy kingdom of Mocenigo, moves heaven and earth in her quest to save her brother Lucas from a mind-altering curse. Mental magic, illusions, rebels wielding advanced artifice, and bedtime-story beasts thought long-dead all stand in her way. Can she succeed in a race against time before Lucas, heir to the throne and a powerful mage, inadvertently changes the world forever?
Cormand
The world of Cormand is one defined by its heroic past.
Mankind has inhabited the circular continent known as the Ringed Land since the beginning of time - or as far back as any histories, oral or written, have recorded anyway. No humans have been encountered from outside the ring. For countless years, man lived in relative peace, worshiping their Primeval patrons. The Primevals were great and powerful beasts that would grant their subjects boons when they felt magnanimous, or curses when they felt otherwise. This would have continued on indefinitely, with mankind in simple natural servitude, were it not for the night one thousand years ago that the Icons fell from the stars, crashing onto Cormand. In different locations, tribes raced to investigate these otherworldly artifacts, and found themselves empowered with newfound abilities and knowledge.
Many of the old Primevals were slain, under guidance from the new Icons, which could encourage their attendants through visions. What followed was a generational effort to clear the land of the beastly titans’ monstrous servants. Countless stories of monster slaying and exploration of the deep places of the world emerge from this time period, which have entertained and frightened many generations of children through the ages. Civilization quickly advanced, spreading out from each of the landing sites to form modern nation states under the guidance of their new gods. Technology grew alongside magic, as commerce encouraged the sharing of ideas across borders. In the present day, lasting religions have formed up around a number of the Icons, an Empire dominates the south, and only a handful of Primevals remain, directing their societies to their own ends.
